April,
1989 - New 47 machine installed at Sauratown Mountain.
May
5, 1989 - Winston-Salem and surrounding communities are
rocked by tornadoes and severe thunderstorms which pass through
the area early on a Friday evening. Trees, power lines and phones
are knocked out, and W4NC as well as ARES are activated throughout
the weekend for aiding in passing information to local emergency
management officials.
June,
1989 - FARC Hamfest held at the Fairgrounds, in what has
been referred to as "The Cattle Barns."
August,
1989 -WSLAN, a 2m digipeater is installed at Baptist Hospital
on 145.03 MHz.( This is the predecessor of the current JNOS
system now installed at the W4NC club shack.)
September,
1989 - W4NC activated to handle emergency traffic when Hurricane
Hugo rips through Charleston, SC and continues through Charlotte,
NC. The storm center cuts through Forsyth County, downing trees
and powerlines in Winston-Salem.
December,
1989 - WA4GIC repeater(64/04) trusteeship changed to FARC,
thus changing its call to W4NC.
1988
President- Bob Gates, KJ4IC
June,
1988 - The first Annual FARC Hamfest is held at the Dixie
Classic Fairgrounds, with Jim Rogers, N1DRI as the first Hamfest
chairman. Two weeks later, W4NC makes a club record 1162 qso's
for a total of 3256 points at Field Day, which is held at Wake
Forest University.
1987

January,
1987 - Dues increased to $12.00/yearly
February,
1987 - ARES and W4NC activated due to heavy flooding in
Yadkin River/Muddy Creek due to heavy snowfall and runoff.
September,
1987 - Wilson Lamb, longtime member of FCARES, WSARC and
FARC passes away.
November,
1987 - FARC votes to financially support a repeater installation
by Roy Watkins, EL8C in Liberia.
1986
President - Chan Sawyer, W4JCB
March,
1986 - FCARES and FARC begin discussions of merging the
two groups. Jim Lehnberg, WA4TCR resigns as EC; Rick Batte,
N4MBI takes over.
April,
1986 - FARC members gather at Pilot Mountain State Park
to witness the passing over of Halley's Comet. Club purchases
Kenwood TS-440AT.
July,
1986 - The FARC and FCARES agree to merge. Dues will be
increased to $12/year for members of both organizations. W4NC
will be the flagship call for the newly merged group.
December,
1986 - Amateur Radio Explorer Post 73 is disbanded due to
lack of interest.
1985

February,
1985 - FARC agrees to provide a $2000 sponsorship to the
1985 Special Olympics.
March,
1985 - FARC agrees to take over sponsorship of Explorer
Post 73 of the Old Hickory Council.
September,
1985 - WXII-12 and FARC sponsor a hotline for information
concerning health and welfare victims due to Hurricane Gloria.
The phone, located in the Channel 12's studios, is manned by
FARC members.
1984

March,
1984 - Tornadoes rip through Eastern NC and SC. W4NC and
ARES was activated. Affected areas of damage included Bennettsville,
SC, which was devastated. The storm continued to cause widespread
damage as far north as Long Branch, NJ.
June,
1984 - FARC constitution updated to allow the club to become
a tax-exempt organization.
July,
1984 - The estate of Clarence Mowery, W4ISH was auctioned
by the club, raising over $2000 for the club treasury.
September,
1984 - FARC, W4NC and ARES activated as primary net control
station for the statewide 75 meter SSB Emergency net during
Hurricane Diana, which slammed the NC coastline. Local businesses
donated food and coffee to members of the club staying in the
shack for 75 straight hours.
1983

1983
- Tower installed at Red Cross Chapter House for club use.
November,
1983 - Connie Conrad, K4BE named as new trustee for W4NC.
The call was in trusteeship of Clarence Mowery's estate.
1982
President- Richard Hostetter, WD4BXN
January,
1982 - Agreement is reached between the FARC and The Northwest
chapter of the American Red Cross to place our club station
at the chapter House. A renovation of a basement room begins
immediately.
March,
1982 - W4NC becomes the callsign of the Forsyth Amateur
Radio Club, replacing WD4LZK. Clarence Mowery, W4ISH was the
trustee for W4NC, which has been under the control of the Board
of Directors of the Winston-Salem Amateur Radio club since its
issue in 1930. Since the dissolution of the WSARC, INC. had
come and gone, negotiations between the FARC , Clarence Mowery
and the FCC were begun to secure the callsign for the FARC,
which was essentially the offspring of the Winston-Salem Amateur
Radio Club. The entire process took a little over a year to
accomplish.
July,
1982 - Norm McLaughlin W4GJR donates a Kenwood TS-900 to
the club. This rig eventually ends up at Baptist Hospital acting
as the link transceiver for 10 meters.
1981
President - John Make, WB4OFT
February,
1981 - Articles of Incorporation are issued to the Forsyth
Amateur Radio Club by the State of North Carolina.
May,
1981 - FARC purchases a Kenwood TS-130 HF rig.
August,
1981 - Club votes to accept, for the first time, paid advertising
in the club newsletter. First to advertisie was a ham radio
store in town, the newly opened Electronic Accessories.
1980

February,
1980 - The entire contents of the Nature Science Center
Amateur station WD4LZK is offered for auction to raise money
for new equipment. Meanwhile, the trustee of the club call,
Rick Eller announces he must move out of town. A board meeting
was held to look into the possibility of securing W4NC from
the WSARC, INC. for the club call.
